Polar Bear Odyssey, Como Park Zoo, MN, USA
The Project
This polar bear habitat acrylic waterproofing project brought American Sealants Inc. to Como Park Zoo’s Polar Bear Odyssey exhibit, where ASI handled glass installation and waterproofing for the habitat’s expansion. Completed in 2005 2010, the remodel nearly quadrupled the size of the polar bears’ home, giving them far more room to sleep, roam, play, and swim.
The Habitat
The result is a 13,140-square-foot outdoor habitat — complete with two pools at varying depths, one of them stocked with live fish so the bears can practice natural hunting behavior, a 260-square-foot digging area, and a climate-controlled indoor viewing building with floor-to-ceiling windows where visitors can watch the bears swim at eye level. The whole exhibit is designed around a Hudson Bay ecosystem, with a river-washed stream, rocky cliffs, and evergreen plantings standing in for the bears’ native Arctic coastline.
Built for Minnesota’s Climate
As with every ASI project, the goal was a seamless, crystal-clear result built to last — giving both the bears and Como’s visitors a habitat that withstands Minnesota’s climate for years to come, the same standard ASI brings to its work with SeaWorld, Disney, and over 100 zoos and aquariums worldwide.
