Jane’s Carousel, NY, USA
A Historic Carousel, a Modern Pavilion
Jane’s Carousel is a hand-carved, 48-horse carousel built in 1922 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company for Idora Park in Youngstown, Ohio. When Idora Park closed, Jane and David Walentas bought the carousel at auction in 1984 for $385,000 and spent 22 years restoring it before giving it a permanent home in a glass-and-acrylic pavilion designed by architect Jean Nouvel, which opened to the public in Brooklyn Bridge Park on September 16, 2011.
The Installation
This historic carousel acrylic pavilion installation brought American Sealants Inc. to that pavilion, set between two of Brooklyn’s most iconic bridges on the waterfront. Two sides of the pavilion’s exterior are acrylic windows that form folding doors nearly 25 feet tall, letting pedestrians flow around the carousel and fresh air in on nice days. The remaining exterior faces are large, fixed acrylic panels that keep the carousel visible at night while protecting it from weather and vandalism.
The materials were engineered to withstand hurricane-force winds and real thermal stress. The hardest technical challenge was aligning the panels to come into specification with no way to adjust the vertical joints, all while accounting for the sun’s shifting position and daily temperature swings throughout the project.
