Jane’s Carousel, NY, USA
Philadelphia Toboggan Company
Jane’s carousel sits between the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge on the Brooklyn side of the river. Two sides of the exterior of the carousel are made up of acrylic windows that form the world’s largest folding doors. The other two sides are made up of large acrylic panels to make the entire project visible at night and literally impenetrable by the elements and or vandals. The acrylic was designed to with stand hurricane force winds and extreme temperature differences. This project had a few challenges, the biggest being the alignment of the panels getting them to come into specification without any way to adjust the vertical joints along with the suns position in the sky and the temperature difference throughout the day.
